Do you know that just smelling coffee can make you feel less stressed?

Can you remember the last time you had a great cup of coffee? No, not the one staring at you next to your computer. The one that you had in Paris, overlooking the quaint little square you stumbled upon. Or perhaps you were at the coffee shop down the road with a loved one. Even just the smell of coffee can conjure up those feelings of these moments for many of us.

Coffee has become an integral part of the business world and the offer of the beverage before a meeting begins, helps to soften the atmosphere, making it more conducive to a friendly approach. What would we do without it?

Besides it smelling so good and giving us that much-needed boost of energy during the day, drinking coffee is believed to have other benefits too such as it’s a great source of antioxidants which help to protect our cells from damage (Jacque, 2017).   It’s also believed the caffeine in coffee makes some people feel happier. Caffeine activates neurotransmitters that control one’s mood helping to stave off depression (Brogaard, 2017)

Taking a break from a couple of hours of focused work by opting for a quick walk to the coffee station to reward yourself with a delicious cup of coffee, helps to improve your concentration when you return to the task.  It is also at the coffee stop where chance meetings with colleagues take place, and general chatter and a catch-up can spark new ideas, create comradery or even the chance to pass on industry knowledge.

The design of an office coffee stop can create the right ambiance making it an integral hub of the office, promoting successful interaction, or it can be a white elephant that is avoided.  Naturally, the right equipment needs to be provided to be able to make a great cup of coffee or tea, but thought needs to go into the textures, colours and finishes that are used.

Besides needing the practicality of surfaces that are durable and easy to clean, various textures on walls or ceilings and interesting graphics are a good way of making the space inviting. Partnered with great ambient lighting, a mood can be created to either liven up the space or establish a gentle atmosphere.

If a Coffee Stop is well designed, it can double up as another, less formal place to work, so it is important to provide plug points and access to Wi-Fi to facilitate this.  Even the smallest coffee stops with just one table setting can provide a place to work.

Think about the flow of people using the equipment, especially in peak times, so that they don’t have to walk back and forth to accomplish the task. Will you be able to accommodate more than one person using the facility at the same time?  Make sure shelves with condiments and mugs are at a height that can be reached by all employees.

Giving thought to the small details can make a difference.  Remember to provide a place to hang dish-towels, preferably out of site, otherwise you’ll find these hanging all over the counter or on door handles.  Provide a cutlery tray in a drawer and consider recycling bins to play your part in preserving the environment.  You may also need a lockable cupboard for beverage stocks.

Having a great coffee stop is no longer a luxury in an office, it’s essential.  Making the most of this space can be very rewarding, so take the opportunity to create a great space for your employees.  Contact Paragon Interiors to provide you with a professional office design service.  With our 20 years of experience and your wish list, we can create the right environment for you and your colleagues. \\PARAGON-DC\Marketing\Marketing Toolbox\D.
