Case Study : Medtronic

The Brief

Medtronic, a global medical technology company, opted in 2011 to move into a larger premises to better suit their requirements, which were as follows:

  • Improved inter-office communication
  • Meeting rooms
  • Canteen for staff and visitors
  • Efficient use of space
  • Separation of public/client spaces from working areas
  • Maintain a high level of staff morale and culture

The Result

Open plan seating and hot-desking was introduced, resulting a far less space required for working areas. Dividers were introduced for privacy, but kept at a low height to encourage communication. The ground floor was dedicated to a reception area and meeting rooms, and large café, the upper floors were assigned to working areas, and the basement turned into a gym for staff use.

A multifunctional training room was created with a central stacking door to allow for easy re-configuration of the room. Quiet rooms were created for staff to make phone calls or focus in silence, and collaboration areas were introduced for informal meetings.

The design was kept very contemporary and sophisticated, with splashes of colour used in staff and client entertainment areas. The design focussed on being contemporary, modern, cutting edge and high tech whilst still maintaining a very warm, welcoming and optimistic atmosphere.
